The season is one game old and already experts are out talking about the Lakers chances of breaking the Chicago Bulls single season record of 72 wins. Even some of the Laker players are already getting into the mix, as Andrew Bynum said last night “Our goal should be to break the Bulls’ [72-win] record. I know that’s much easier to say than do, but we have that kind of a team.”The great news is that the Lakers are currently on an 82 win pace (unfortunately so are 3 other teams). The bad news is there is no way they are going to keep up an 82 win pace (there is a reason the longest winning streak in professional North American sports history is 33 games by the Lakers in 1972). The talent around the NBA is too high for one team to run away with the league. Bottom line, is 72 wins possible? Yes. Is 72 wins likely? Not so much. Let’s give the season 10-15 games before we get carried away.
72 Wins?
